Ghayour continues the tradition of her cookbook Persiana (2015) to bring complex flavors of the Middle East combined with a western flare to the modern kitchen. Ghayour describes herself as a "consummate home cook," and she brings that vision to life in the recipes of Simply. Dishes are straightforward and flavorful, bringing together traditional and unique ingredients in faultless balance. Throughout, Ghayour's casual yet informative tone encourages improvisation. Smart "simply delicious with…" pairing suggestions further maximize the book's usefulness, while helping cooks plan complete meals. Vibrant photos make selecting what to make first close to impossible, including plenty of choices for vegetarians and those with a sweet tooth, too. The "lazy beef and caramelized onion pide" and date and chicken wings warrant special mention as great choices for entertaining or an easy family meal. Quite simply, a perfect addition for home chefs looking to jazz up dinners and bring new show stoppers to the table.

Food writer Ghayour received acclaim for her debut Persiana as well as the highly praised Bazaar. Her latest is a standout collection of dishes from her childhood, blending the influences of her native Iran with her Western upbringing. This leads to vegetarian stars like cauliflower and cumin soup, meat-based dishes such as harissa and lime chicken wings, and desserts like roasted walnut and tahini ice cream. As with her previous cookbooks, Ghayour brings directions to life with her encouraging voice, and offers suggestions for individuality. Her love of vegetables is evident throughout; vegetarian recipes are boldly labeled, allowing readers to gravitate to them at their liking. Exceptional photography by Kirkham allows each dish, whether a snack or a full meal, to shine and will aid home cooks in re-creating them with ease. Pairing suggestions at the end of most recipes offer advice for mixing and matching. All chapters are exceptional but The Melting Pot, with dishes such as corn, black bean, and avocado salad, showcase Ghayour's signature creativity. VERDICT A must-have collection of innovative and flavorful, yet satisfying meals for all occasions.--Stephanie Sendaula, Library Journal
